September Family Camp

Did you go to summer camp as a kid? Do you have fond memories of campfire talent shows, swimming with friends and pillow fights, eating meals in a mess hall, and tie-dying in a craft cabin with a Birkenstock-clad hippie?

Well...I sure did, and I want my kids to experience it too...with me!

That's Family Camp. A loosely organized camp for kids and their parents (but even more for their parents...).

Camp Paxson is a 15-acre tract bordering Seeley Lake in the Lolo National Forest, and is 2 1/4 miles northwest of the community of Seeley Lake, Montana. The camp's 20 rustic buildings include a large dining hall/lodge, 15 sleeping cabins, two restroom/shower buildings and a caretaker's cabin. The sylvan camp features a swimming beach, dock, amphitheatre/fire circle, horseshoe pits, and volleyball court.
Camp Paxson is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is
the only group camp in Montana built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Each cabin can sleep up to 8. Just let me know if you want to share with someone else...or if you need a bit of privacy to do secretive things in your cabin at night....There are also rooms in the main hall for smaller parties and the option to bring a tent. Bring sleeping bags or bedding for twin beds....my preference, if you care to know, is a sleeping bag on a twin sheet. Waking to a new day with your cheek glued to the plastic covering of an old boy scout mattress is less than ideal.

One cabin will be designated the Kids Cabin, and kids who are old enough and comfortable enough can overnight there.

The Main Hall/Lodge should have everything we need for preparing and serving meals as far as cooking equipment, dishes and cutlery, and a dishwasher. As soon as I know who all is coming, I will assign each family to a meal that they will prepare with other families and serve to the whole camp. If you have allergies or intolerance or are fasting or something...let us know, or bring some reinforcements of your own!

You can go off on your own or with your family during the day...or there will be a number of activities to participate in if you wanna. We will convene nightly for cocktail hour at the Main Lodge...make sure to bring a contribution!

There is a beach and a dock at the camp...if you have a boat, paddle board, giant floatee device, or scuba gear...bring them! There will be some canoes and life jackets provided.

Bring your courage and your musical instruments because this stage and its audience are calling your name. There will be a kids and adult campfire nightly. Perhaps those gentleman will join us with their cauldron of steaming mystery goolash as well...

  1. Sounds AWESOME, Amy! I've been thinking about this a ton since you mentioned it to us at Ratatat. Colin and I just have to check on a couple of things before we can commit for sure, but we really want to come! And would love to share a cabin with any other Hickey's that might be there. ;-)
